On ne l’a pas vue l’année dernière comme prévu. On ne va pas la voir cette année non-plus, ni l’année prochaine comme espéré. Il va falloir attendre 2024 maintenant pour qu’on la revoie ! Cependant, on peut plonger dans le livre « Les Fêtes Maritimes de Brest », 100 pages de photos et textes (bilingues français/anglais) par Nigel Pert et Dan Houston, pour se rappeler les bons souvenirs des éditions passées ou imaginer les futurs souvenirs de la fête à venir et de celles qui vont suivre.
It didn’t happen last year as planned. It won’t be happening this year, nor next as hoped for. We are now going to have to wait until 2024 for the world’s best sea festival ! In the meantime however, we can dive into « Celebrating Traditional Boats » (« Les Fêtes Maritimes de Brest »), 100 pages of photographs and text (bi-lingual English/French) by Nigel Pert and Dan Houston, to bring back happy memories of past events or to imagine future souvenirs of the festival to come and those that will follow.

Celebrating Traditional Boats

The largest maritime festival in the world, with around 10,000 sailors bringing 2,000 vessels to a crowd that can reach a million, happens every four years at the port of Brest, in French Brittany.
It’s a week long international party celebrating maritime heritage from around the world with craft displays, music, food and fireworks… and sailors, sailing and showing off their ships. And the boats are of all sizes from Tall Ships to small ships – some people will attend in their dinghy. In between are the old sailing trawlers, the tunnymen and oyster smacks, pilot cutters, brown-sailed barges, salmon punts, steam launches and a host of others that create contemporary vistas from the old age of sail.
It’s all been photographed by Nigel Pert – a photographic artist whose love of the lines of these old boat designs leaps off the pages of this book. Having photographed every festival, often as an official photographer he’s selected from his rich archive of not just the boats but also the people, the events, the nighttime fireworks, the atmosphere of the quayside cafés in a gorgeously produce book that takes you into the heart of this special event. The photographs are complemented with some in-depth and observant details by Dan Houston. With over 200 photographs, many over full frame across its 100 pages this book is a fabulous feast for the eyes for anyone who loves old boats and the old sea ways – which have been coming together at the Brest festival since 1992.

Le Livre des Fêtes Maritimes de Brest

Tous les quatre ans le port breton de Brest accueille le plus grand festival maritime du monde rassemblant 2 000 bateaux et 10 000 marins et qui attire autour d’un million de visiteurs.
C’est une fête internationale célébrant l’héritage maritime mondial qui présente pendant une semaine des démonstrations d’artisanat de marine, de la musique, des feux d’artifice, sans oublier la restauration… et des marins qui naviguent et font visiter leurs embarcations. On y trouve des bateaux de toutes les tailles et de toutes les formes depuis les Grands Voiliers jusqu’aux tous petits canots. Il y a des vieux chalutiers à voile, des thoniers et des smacks huitriers, des pilotines et des barges aux voiles rouges, des plates pour pêcher le saumon, des canots à vapeurs et une myriade d’autres encore donnant un aperçu d’une époque révolue de la voile.
Le tout est photographié par Nigel Pert, artiste photographe dont l’amour des lignes de ces anciennes embarcations jaillit des pages de ce livre. Ayant photographié toutes les éditions de la Fête, souvent en tant que photographe officiel de l’événement, il a sélectionné dans son immense archive des images non seulement des bateaux mais aussi des hommes, des attractions, de l’ambiance sur les quais, de la vie nocturne, pour que ce livre vous amène directement au cœur de cette manifestation unique. Les photographies sont accompagnées par légendes et les textes érudits et amusants de Dan Houston, ancien rédacteur en chef de Classic Boat magazine et Classic Sailor. Ce livre de 100 pages avec plus de 200 photos en couleurs est un régal pour les yeux de tous ceux qui aiment la navigation à l’ancienne et la culture maritime et qui se rassemblent tous les quatre ans à Brest depuis 1992.

Dragon Class 90th Anniversary Regatta 2019, San Remo, Italy
A couple of weeks ago the International Dragon Asocciation held a regatta celebrating 90 years of the class’ existence. I spent three days with the fleet of 150 yachts in San Remo on the Ligurian coast of Italy. There was sailing on only two of those days as Mondays’ winds were too strong and too variable in direction, the race committee did their best to get at least one race in, not giving a final two guns till early afternoon. Here you can see a selection of my photos from the event.

Il y a deux semaines, l’Association Internationale des Dragons a organisé une régate pour fêter les 90 ans d’existence de cette classe. J’ai passé trois jours parmi la flottille de 150 bateaux rassemblés à San Remo sur la côte ligure d’Italie. Le vent était trop variable et trop fort pour courir le premier jour, malgré la patience et l’espoir du comité de course qui a attendu jusqu’au début de l’après midi avant de se résigner à donner les deux coups de canon. Voici une sélection de mes images prises pendant l’évènement.
La Fête de la Loire

La semaine dernière j’ai dévié de mon programme habituel de septembre. Au lieu de descendre directement dans le Sud pour le circuit de fin de saison des yachts classiques, j’ai décidé de voir un peu comment se passe la navigation fluviale. Je suis allé assister à La « Fête de Loire » à Orléans. Cette fête biannuelle est déjà à sa 9° édition. J’y ai trouvé un tout autre monde : des gens « fluviaux » très sympathiques et peut être tout aussi passionnés que les « gens » de mer. Le Royaume Uni était le pays invité d’honneur et les britanniques, qui ont apporté leurs magnifiques embarcations , ont été reçus royalement malgré la politique actuelle du pays. A la fin de la semaine, je rejoins les « Régates Royales » à Cannes puis les « Voiles de Saint Tropez » avant d’aller à San Remo, en Italie, pour le 90ème anniversaire des régates de la Classe « Dragon ».

This year, instead of going to the south of France and Italy for the last few regattas of the season in the classic yacht circuit, I decided to see what inland waterway navigation was like and went to the Fête de Loire, in Orleans. UK was the invited country and the crews who brought their excellent craft over to the event received a very warm welcome, despite our current political manoeuvres. I met a completely new set of sailors with every bit as much enthusiasm as their marine counterparts. I will now go down to the Régates Royales in Cannes, Les Voiles de Saint Tropez and then the Dragon 90th anniversary regatta in San Remo, Italy.

Sunday 26th May – stairway to the future
Monday 27th The Venetian delegation install their stand with the panels of photographs I took in March of the various craftsmen and women who contribute to the construction and use of gondolas
Tuesday 28th Gildas Flahault paints a Golfe de Morbihan landscape live during the crew party at the lle d’Arz. He worked for at least three hours non-stop, all from memory, despite a very similar scene being visible if he stepped back three or four metres from his “canvas”
Wednesday 29th a couple of youngsters finding support on one of the two panels either side of the main stage at Vannes featuring one of my aerial images from the 2013 Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan Monday parade
Thursday 30th ended, bathed in marvellous evening light at Locmariaquer, sharing a picnic with friends of the 2nd fleet – sail and oars – on the pontoon next to their Ness Yawl
Friday 31st I was invited to sail/row to Auray with the Ness Yawl. Here are some of the other members of the fleet in the Auray River
Saturday 1st June. The Grand Parade. What can one say? All the superlatives apply, simply splendid, well organised, almost as many boats on the water as people on the shore-sides, with weather to dream of. I chose the bowsprit of Oosterschelde as my viewpoint

Venice is one of the invited regions at this year’s Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan, the French maritime festival to be held from the 27th May to the 1st June. Last week, I was in Venice to photographically record the skills of the many craftsmen who work together to make gondolas. My images will be used in the elaboration of the stands in Vannes of the two associations : El Felze and Arzana, that will make up the Venetian delegation. Most of the craftsmen in these photos will be present in Vannes and demonstrating their art.

Cette année, la ville de Venise fait partie des invités à « la Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan », le festival maritime qui aura lieu du 27 mai au 1er juin. La semaine dernière, je suis allé à Venise pour traduire en image le savoir-faire de tous les artisans qui contribuent à la réalisation des gondoles. Mes photos seront utilisées pour l’élaboration des stands des deux associations : El Felze et Arzana qui constitueront la délégation vénitienne. La plupart des artisans sur les photos ci-dessous seront présents à Vannes pour présenter leur art.

Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2018 got off to a windy start with all boats confined to port. Fingers crossed that some of that air will still be around for today – but not too much!
Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2018 ont commencé avec une journée au port pendant que les vents atteignaient les 70 noeuds par moments!
An exhibition of photos from this year’s voyage of the Hermione which took her from La Rochelle, on the west coast of France, the 21st February, around Spain into the Mediterranean. She will return to her home port of Rochefort, some twenty miles south of La Rochelle on Sunday 16th June. The exhibition is currently in place in anticipation of the ships return. My photos are mainly from the the first leg to Tangier and present the viewer with an experience of sailing aboard an eighteenth century frigate in violent Atlantic wintertime conditions.
